Wal-Mart gets everyone's stimulus packages.

Ew, nasty. Wal-Mart. What a nasty place to shop. I hate it. Never mind the evils of Wal-Mart driving out small local businesses, it's plain and simple a nasty place to go. I get physically ill just walking in and seeing the people that live/shop there. You all know what I mean. Physically repulsive people smacking their kids, waddling down the entire width of each isle in stained spandex pajamas, and t-shirts sporting confederate flags or an iron-on picture of Mickey Mouse.
I waste precious gas and money to drive an extra 15 miles to go elsewhere when I HAVE to. That said, their business strategy of marketing the lowest prices has made them even richer. This time they can thank the government.
I've never been to Costco, so I can't comment on them.
Great. I love capitalism, but damn, some shit you just don't need to spend your money on. I'm not even sure why I'm so irritated about this. It's not that Wal-Mart greatly benefited from the stimulus packages. I think it's because something so aesthetically displeasing did. If Target had made headlines, I wouldn't have had a second thought about it.
If you gotta buy it, buy it local.

I don't find Costco very pleasant to shop at either, particularly when they're sampling food (most of the time it seems) and there are traffic jams of carts everywhere. BUT, Costco is "well known" for its good employee compensation and providing health care etc. Wal-Mart is well-known for how terribly their employees are looked after re: health care. The last I heard, they were "trying" to improve in that regard, so maybe they're better now?

Well, they didn't get mine. They never get anything from me unless I have no choice. And even then, Rotormommy has to drag me in kicking and screaming. Having worked for them while in college, I can safely say that it is the worst company I ever worked for.

For reasons like those Samantha cites, we chucked our Sam's Club card the day Costco opened up here in W-S and never looked back. My brother works in the grocery retail business so I'm always talking to clerks about their own job experience -- Costco folks to a person always say they love their jobs.

As for WalMart, if you can deal with it (and like you, Matt, I cannot), you can save a lot of money in that place. Sure, your kid may get lead paint poisoning from the sweet Lightning McQueen cereal bowl you got for a quarter, but I also know from grocers that you can buy staples for 20-30% less than I choose to at my local market.

Fortunately, I'd flush that savings in gas money, so I don't feel too bad.

Thanks for not dissing my employer. Its hard enough to get up and go to work as it is.

I'm with you, buy local! We love all of our fresh fruits and veggies from our local farmer's market. Its a bit more expensive, but well worth it.
